“I don’t crave publicity, I don’t want to be on telescreen, I just want to be me doing what I want – sing!”

Veteran singer Tara Thapa, who shuns media attention, might pass unnoticed but one listen to her voice, the voice with a legacy, and you’re hit with the sense of déjà vu.

Considered the pioneers in Nepali folk music, Thapa got into singing some 40 years ago. “It was in Chaitra 28, 2028 BS I recorded my first song, a duet, with Purna Singh Nepali.”
The song in question was “Mahi Dai”. Written by Saroj Gopal, music by CK Rasaili, the song was an instant hit and Thapa was a new star in the Nepali music scene, quite befitting her name – Tara.

Artist On Rise: Shruti

After almost two years of hard work and struggle and a change in record label, Shruti Singh finally offered her debut album “Shruti” last month. It is a record that introduces her as a fresh act with full of potential. That’s a verdict made by critics and listeners but what about her post-release story? That’s what she shares with us and more on our little chitchat session.

1. You finally released your first effort “Shruti”. How does it feel to have your work out there?
Shruti:
When a debut album comes out, obviously, an artist is extremely happy. And I was no exception! What I’m feeling right now is beyond tremendous joy, especially since I’ve been receiving good feedback more than expected.

Only love, dissected

Industrialist and famed lyricist Basanta Chaudhary’s fourth album “Only Love”, which took two years to complete, includes 11 songs all composed by Chaudhary himself and music by Nhyoo Bajracharya.

Released three months ago the album is doing well in the charts/ airwaves.

“I put my thoughts into simple words and then go about writing the songs. And it is a tough job for any artist to self assess their own work, hence a discussion as such is very important for the personal growth,” said industrialist Basant Chaudhary; and this was the very reason why a discussion programme was conducted at Nepal Tourism Board premises on July 19.

Avinash Ghising is ready to burst into music scene after a hiatus of five years. The “Himali Chhora”, that’s what he prefers to be called, is putting final touches to his seventh album that’ll boast Selo, religious, sentimental and oodles of pop music.

The new album is entitled “Son Of Himalaya”, for obivious reason, and yes, there’s a story behind the name. “It’s shocking, many people don’t know that Nepal exists. They usually mistake it for Naples in Italy. It’s only after the mention of Mt. Everest that brings a glint of recognition. So I thought: why not make it my title?” exclaimed Ghising.

Passion Branching Out

After the release of his album “Mirrors”, it may seem like Shreshan Shrestha aka s2s has disappeared from the music scene. Recordings wise, yes, but not entirely. He is contributing to the industry, however, from behind the scene.

Apart from being a fervent music artist, it has recently become evident that s2s also has a passion for web designing. You can see his work in websites of a handful of artists such as Aastha B and Visan Yonjan among others. And as if these two interests were not enough to keep him busy, the singer has now ventured out for another profession by trying his hands on music video direction! Talk about being jack of all and master of all.

I still remember those music videos which used to pop up on TV with a different picture quality and a unique set of music. I also recall they belonged to Manoj Shrestha and if you too loved his music back then, then you’re in for a treat! The singer is giving a chance to revive those days as he makes some of his songs and videos available on website for free!

It’s been ages since we heard of Shrestha who has always been best known for hits such “Chari Bharara” and “Shir Ko Topi Shiraima”. After catching up with him, he revealed that he recently returned from Australia and is focusing on becoming a loving husband and a good father right now. The singer, who currently works as a freelance consultant for banks, is happily married to wife Subekshya and has a 4-year-old daughter Samanata.
